Prophetic Justice: Essays and Reflections on Race, Religion, and Politics

In this prophetic collection of seminal essays and reflections, the public intellectual, theologian and social justice scholar Reverend Professor Keith Magee provides a thoughtful, sharp, and critical analysis of how questions of race, religion, and politics impact on society today.

Prophetic Justice: Essays and Reflections on Race, Religion, and Politics (2021) explores the historical context of American democracy and how it has long failed to deliver true justice to all the nation’s citizens. It exposes the social construct of race and the myriad ways in which this false idea – along with sometimes willful misinterpretations of sacred texts – have been used to justify the subjugating of one people by another, simply because of the color of their skin.

Written between 2017 - 2021, these essays and articles touch on some painful subjects, but also give us reason to hope. Magee describes how, with courage and faith, we can create brave spaces of engagement in which people can come together to face up to the injustices of the past and to learn how to love ‘the other’ as they love themselves, thus creating a new world in which every life truly matters.

Reviews:

"Keith Magee has written a rich, wise, and important mixture of race, politics, and religion, all placed in a history of centuries. We know all of it and yet we don't. We know that George Floyd was not an accident and Prophetic Justice reminds us why Black Lives Matter has to be called out in the 21st Century. We have made progress, but history tells us how deep racism remains. This is a must read this book."

Peter Edelman, Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Law and Public Policy

Georgetown University Law Center

“The intersection of faith and politics is compellingly examined in Keith Magee’s new book, Prophetic Justice. He reveals religious philosophies embedded in every aspect of our nation.”

Carol Moseley-Braun, American Diplomat and Politician

"From within our deeply divided country comes Keith Magee with a book that brings political and religious wisdom. His voice echoes the biblical prophets, arousing our courage to restore justice and giving us hope and inspiration to create a much better future."

Susannah Heschel, Eli M. Black Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies

Dartmouth College

"Prophetic Justice is a challenge to any person of faith.  It calls into question the very roots of your belief in God, Religion and Country.  It challenges your perspective on who you are meant to be as a citizen of the earth.  It evokes feelings of mourning for the systemic failures around us and a deep hope for our collective future."

Elle Borders, Actor and Playwright

“A call to understand America’s soul. Keith Magee nails it!  Prophetic Justice is practical and digestible, offering us questions and answers to who we really are.”

Cory Michael Smith, Actor
